International Law Today: Challenges and Prospects

Reflections on the 80th Anniversary of the International Court of Justice

Panel discussion in a formal conference setting with audience seated in front of speakers

In 2026, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) marks 80 years since it began its work. To mark the anniversary, the Foreign Policy Forum and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Croatia will host “International Law Today: Challenges and Prospects”,a stocktaking discussion on the contribution of international law to peace and the challenges facing the international legal order today.

The event will reflect on the role of international law and international legal institutions in maintaining peace, resolving disputes and shaping the contemporary international order. Against the background of major geopolitical and policy challenges, the discussion will consider both the continuing relevance of international law and the practical difficulties of applying and enforcing it in a changing international environment.

The programme features a panel discussion with Dr Iva Vukušić (Utrecht University), Professor Ivo Josipović (Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb) and Professor Iris Goldner Lang (Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb), followed by student reflections and an audience Q&A.

The opening address will be delivered by H.E. Charlotte van Baak, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Croatia, and Professor Dejan Jović, President of the Foreign Policy Forum Managing Board, will introduce the panel.
